Historic Masters

Several years ago, a group of collectors in the United Kingdom initiated a program to issue recordings of historic vocal treasures from the original metal masters. As Historic Masters, they have to date (September 2005) published hundreds of "78" rpm discs in twenty-seven series. This page indexes those issues by the named singers.

In manufacturing analogue recordings, both LP and "78", a metal master is made from the matrix which is originally recorded. That master is a negative image of the matrix which then creates a positive "mother", which in turn leads to a negative "stamper" which is used to press the released disc. Each master may generate many mothers, each of which in turn may generate many stampers. The master is often retained after a production run; in the case of most of the Historic Masters recordings, those metal parts were licensed from EMI and modern pressings at the original playback speed were made without any form of processing. In short, the HM issues are identical with those which were or could have been found in the shops a century or so ago, except that instead of being on fragile shellac the discs are pressed onto modern vinyl.

Proper playback of these original materials is both a science and an art; it is addressed at the Historic Masters WWW site: http://www.historicmasters.org/. Originally, the masters were of recordings never issued before or issued only in such small numbers that no copy is likely to have survived. As EMI's resources of such gems were depleted, HM has included later recordings of great rarity; no longer are the titles only those from acoustic recording or of obscure artists.

It is difficult to fault the operation of Historic Masters; their service to collectors is admirable in almost every way, though one might wish for more discographic information. However, those wishing to exploit their collections of the HM issues or to seek out a rarity among those in subscribers' collections may be frustrated by the lack of order in the issues. They were published as the masters were found and prepared. For example, Issue 27 includes sides by Celestina Boninsegna and Sena Jurinac; by such well-known singers as Jussi Björling and such obscure ones as Mary Lewis. This page provides some assistance in that retrieval, indexing by the name of each singer identified and providing as the first datum the issue number assigned by HM. Note that there is an exception to the sequencing for Fernando De Lucia; a trove of masters of that great tenor was found secreted in Naples, where they survived WW II unpublished. Their nuimbers are given with an initial * where the disc itself shows a numeral one.
